Living in the Real World after Drug Rehab

After finishing a program at one of the residential drug and alcohol treatment centers, you may be wondering if you can really stay clean now that you’ve left. If you’re truly dedicated to staying clean, it is possible to be successful, but it will take a lot of hard work and dedication. But most importantly, it will take time.

You might compare it to losing someone you love to death. When the person first dies, it’s hard to imagine life without that person, but as time goes on, it becomes easier and easier. It’s the same with drugs and alcohol, and with every day that passes, the temptation will be less pronounced. Here are some tips to staying clean now that you’re back in the real world:

Get the Support of Friends and Family

The first thing you should do is inform friends and family that you plan to stay clean. They will help be a support to you as you make the transition. Also inform them that you do not want to be around drugs or alcohol. If your vice is alcohol, don’t keep it in your house and don’t go out with friends who plan on drinking. If they are truly your friends, they would not want to put you in a situation that would possibly cause you to relapse.

See Your Counselor Regularly

When you return home, you will be put with a counselor who can help you prevent a relapse. Talking with a counselor about what you’re feeling and what cravings you’re having will help. Your counselor can help you work through strategies you can use if you are feeling tempted by your vice. That advice will be invaluable as you work through your addiction.

Most importantly, the best advice out there is to never give up. You’re worth the effort, so never stop trying!
